EPDM stands for the chemical compounds, ethylene, propylene, and diene monomers, which are the primary chemicals used in the production of the material. The chemicals used to produce EPDM make it a superior rubber for outdoor application compared to other elastomers, including many synthetic options. When these solvents are put through vulcanization, they come together to form its excellent resistance to chemicals, heat, and damaging environmental factors.
EPDM was named after ethylene, propylene, and diene monomers because they play a large role in its unique environmental resistance properties. The monomers ethylene and propylene, in particular, combine to form a saturated polymer backbone, allowing EPDM to stand up well against abrasive temperatures, oxidation, ozone, and weathering. Additionally, as a synthetic elastomer, EPDM is stronger than many natural rubber variations and offers excellent surface protection.
Due to these properties, EPDM is often used for industrial applications involving chemicals and extreme temperatures. Neither the chemicals nor the outside environment will damage EPDM, making it an ideal material for outdoor industrial use. A common application for EPDM is the production of industrial seals and gaskets, as it is a resilient and long-lasting material capable of providing reliable and safe performance.
The main difference between EPDM and nitrile rubber can be seen in their chemical and physical properties. EPDM is regarded as a weather-resistant rubber, whereas nitrile rubber is valued for its use in oil- or petroleum-related applications. While both elastomers are extremely durable and resistant to numerous chemical solvents, each material has properties that surpass those of the other elastomer, making them better suited for different applications.
Both nitrile and EPDM are highly chemical-resistant elastomers that are ideal for industrial applications involving harsh chemical solvents. EPDM retains excellent resistance to most caustic chemicals, but it will swell and lose its strength when exposed to oil. Although it is not resistant to oils like nitrile rubber, EPDM can still provide long-lasting performance and perform well when exposed to many chemicals.
EPDM is capable of resisting degradation caused by direct sunlight and cracking caused by ozone. In contrast, nitrile rubber can be severely damaged by ozone cracking when exposed to outdoor environments. Both EPDM and nitrile have wide operating temperature ranges that allow them to hold up well in the face of extreme temperatures; however, EPDM is a more versatile material that can be used both indoors and outdoors without deteriorating.
