Rubber floors for gyms are made of durable rubber materials that make them the best choice in creating protective surfacing for home gyms. Rubber home gym flooring options are generally put in place to provide protection against physical factors, such as impacts, vibrations, and abrasions, while also working to create a non-slip surface. Rubber workout flooring is made of both natural or synthetic rubber variations that are resilient and tough, allowing them to remain reliable for years in abrasion conditions. In addition, custom gym flooring is available in two forms that allow you to find a flooring option that is best suited for the space available in your home. Furthermore, because different home gyms contain different equipment, rubber floors for gyms are also available in the forms or interlocking tiles and flooring rolls.

What are Rubber Gym Floors Made of?

Rubber gym flooring is made of post-consumer rubber or synthetic rubber in the form of interlocking tiles and flooring rolls. Rubber floors for gyms are produced with resilient post-consumer rubber and synthetic rubber variations. Rubber workout flooring is designed to provide durable floor protection against impacts, vibrations, and abrasions. Rubber is the ideal material for creating durable gym flooring due to its excellent shock absorption as well as its superior tear resistance. The post-consumer rubber variations used to create gym floors are recycled and reclaimed rubber. Both rubbers derive from discarded vehicle tires but are produced differently. Recycled rubber floors for gyms are made of crumb rubber that is created by grinding up vehicle tires and re-adhering them back together to form a solid product. In general, rubber is a non-slip material; however, the surface texture produced by the crumb rubber used to create recycled rubber gym floors enhances traction. Reclaimed rubber floors for gyms are made by heating post-consumer vehicle tire rubber and melding them together to form a smooth and solid product. Vehicle tires are made of durable materials that allows it to remain shock absorbent and weatherproof products. Case in point, “The two main synthetic rubber polymers used in tire manufacturing are butadiene rubber and styrene butadiene rubber” (ustires.org). Therefore, re-purposed recycled and reclaimed rubber custom gym flooring will provide excellent shock absorption to protect home floors from damaging impacts and vibrations.

The synthetic rubber variations used to create rubber workout flooring are thermoplastic rubber and SBR. Synthetic rubbers are inherently stronger and more durable than natural rubber materials, making padded gym flooring made of synthetic rubber an extremely reliable protective flooring option. Synthetic SBR is a commonly used rubber variation found in vehicle tires due to its excellent abrasion resistance. For instance, SBR retains excellent long-lasting properties, including improved strength and abrasion resistance (polymerdatabase.com). Due to these factors of SBR, making rubber floors for gyms made of synthetic SBR a durable and reliable option. Thermoplastic rubber is also an extremely durable rubber variation that features properties of both plastic and rubber materials. For example, thermoplastic rubber provides “plastic properties such as high-temperature performance, thermoplastic processability, as well as good tensile and tear strength whereas the rubbery phase provides the elastomeric properties such as low-temperature performance, durometer hardness (resistance to indentation), flexibility as well as compression and tension set” (polymerdatabase.com). Thermoplastic rubber is tough enough to remain a reliable surface protector in the face of constant impacts and vibrations, making it an ideal material for creating rubber floors for gyms.

Rubber flooring for gym equipment and fitness machines do not have to be extremely thick. Thicker padded gym flooring is ideal for weight room flooring as these areas will require thicker mats for better shock absorption as weights are highly damaging to floors when they are dropped. Not only do rubber floors for gyms offer floor protection, but it also offers excellent cushioning and comfort qualities.
